The word has been worn smooth by overuse. It now means, in common speech, roughly “someone was nice to me and later wasn’t,” which is not a pattern but a disappointment. That reading is worth discarding, because the actual structure is specific, and once you can see the structure you can identify it in week one rather than year three.
Love bombing is not excessive affection. It is accelerated intimacy deployed as an intelligence-gathering operation. Everything that feels like closeness is doing double duty: it is producing attachment in you and producing information for them.
What Is Actually Being Collected
Consider what an intense opening actually extracts.
Fourteen-hour conversations produce a complete map of your history: what wounded you, who abandoned you, what you have never been given, what you are ashamed of. Delivered voluntarily, warmly, in the belief that you are being finally, properly known. You are being catalogued. The material you offer in those conversations is the material that will be used later: the abandonment you disclosed becomes the threat that works on you, the shame you confessed becomes the lever, the thing you said no one had ever noticed becomes the thing that is withdrawn.
Rapid escalation produces a test of your boundaries. Not a violation of them, a measurement. How fast will you move if pulled? Will you cancel plans? Will you skip work? Will you meet the family in week three, move in by month two, agree to something you would normally think about? Each acceleration you accept without friction reports back a figure: this one can be moved at this rate. The bombing is not only seduction. It is calibration.
Extravagant attention produces a baseline you will later be chasing. This is the mechanism that matters most and is understood least. The intensity is not the relationship. It is the reference point against which every subsequent ordinary day will register as a loss. You cannot miss something you never had. The point of the flood is to install a high-water mark, so that normal treatment feels like withdrawal and withdrawal feels like catastrophe.
The Structural Signature
Genuine early passion exists. People do fall hard, talk all night, and mean it. Confusing the two is expensive in both directions, so the distinctions are worth stating plainly.
Genuine intensity is mutual in pace; love bombing sets the pace unilaterally. Two people accelerating together check with each other: “is this too fast, are you alright with this.” An operation does not check, because checking would surface hesitation, and hesitation would slow the survey. Notice who is setting tempo, and whether the tempo survives your asking to slow it.
Genuine intensity is curious; love bombing is declarative. A person falling for you asks questions and revises their picture of you as answers arrive. An operation tells you who you are: “you’re not like other people, you’re the only one who’s ever understood me, I’ve never felt this with anyone.” These are not observations. They are assignments. And they are unfalsifiable within three weeks of meeting, which is precisely why they arrive within three weeks.
Genuine intensity survives friction; love bombing does not. This is the single most reliable test available, and it is available early. Introduce one small, reasonable delay: “I can’t do Saturday, let’s do the following week”, and watch. Warmth that persists through a mild no is warmth. Warmth that cools, sulks, escalates, or reframes your no as evidence of a defect in you was never warmth. It was pressure wearing warmth as a costume.
Genuine intensity does not require isolation; love bombing quietly arranges it. Watch whether the flood has a direction. Time spent exclusively together, framed as romance. Mild disparagement of your friends, framed as protectiveness. A gradual reorganisation of your week around one person, framed as devotion. Real intimacy adds to your life. The operation’s version replaces it, and the replacement is disguised as the intimacy itself.
Why It Works on Competent People
The persistent myth is that this lands on the naive. The opposite is closer to true. The people most efficiently love bombed are frequently the most functional: capable, self-sufficient, chronically the one who gives rather than receives, and therefore starved of exactly the thing being flooded at them.
If you have spent years being the reliable one, being suddenly and totally attended to does not feel like a red flag. It feels like relief. It feels like the first correct thing that has happened. And the operation is reading that hunger accurately, that is what the fourteen-hour conversation was for.
This is worth stating without shame attached: being susceptible to being loved well is not a defect. It is the ordinary condition of a person who has not been. The vulnerability is not that you wanted it. The vulnerability is that you had no method for checking it.
The Method
You do not need to become suspicious of affection. You need one habit: apply time, and apply friction.
Time first, because the operation depends on speed. Nothing genuine is damaged by three months. Everything manufactured is. A person who means it will still be there in the spring; a survey cannot afford to run that long, because a survey run slowly gets checked against behaviour, and behaviour is where the discrepancy lives. Simply refuse to make irreversible decisions inside the flood: no moving in, no merged finances, no cut ties, no life restructured. Not as a punishment. As a policy.
Then friction. Small, reasonable, repeated. A declined invitation. A plan kept with a friend. A question asked twice. You are not testing their love; you are reading their response to the ordinary limits every real relationship contains. What you are looking for is whether the warmth is conditional on your compliance. It is a fast reading and it is very hard to fake, because a system that requires compliance cannot tolerate being told no even once without something showing.
And keep your people. Isolation is not a late-stage event; it begins here, gently, as romance. The friend who says “we never see you anymore” is not being possessive. She is reporting a measurement.
One honesty, so this is not misused: some relationships simply begin with force, and stay good. The reading is not “intensity is bad”. The reading is “intensity that cannot survive time, friction, or your other relationships was never intensity”. Those are separable, and they separate early, if you are looking.
Love bombing feels like being finally seen. It is being finally surveyed. The difference is not in how it feels. The difference is in what happens when you slow it down.
Once you can read the code, the code stops working, and this one stops working earliest of all.
